Kaufman, TX (September 27, 2025) – On September 24, a tragic head-on collision between a compact car and a CareFlite ambulance on Farm to Market Road 740 in Kaufman County resulted in the death of the car’s driver, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The crash occurred when the driver of a 2015 Hyundai Elantra veered into the southbound lane and collided with the ambulance, which had its emergency lights activated. The CareFlite ambulance was carrying five people, including the driver, three passengers, and a patient, all of whom were transported to Methodist Hospital with no serious injuries reported.
The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, reviewing traffic patterns, road conditions, and witness statements.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and also hope the injured individuals recover quickly and fully.
Traffic Accidents in Kaufman County
Collisions involving emergency vehicles can be particularly dangerous. Ambulances often travel at high speeds while using lights and sirens, and drivers on the road sometimes misjudge their distance or reaction time, which can lead to catastrophic outcomes. Head-on collisions, in particular, carry a high risk of severe injury or death due to the combined forces of both vehicles.
Kaufman County has experienced a steady increase in serious car accidents over the past several years, with the Texas Department of Transportation reporting over 300 crashes in 2024 alone, many resulting in injuries or fatalities.
Drivers in rural and semi-rural areas like FM 740 often encounter high-speed traffic, limited visibility, and narrow shoulders, which can make avoiding collisions more difficult. While accidents involving emergency vehicles are less frequent, they tend to be particularly severe due to the speed and size of the vehicles involved. These incidents highlight the importance of caution, attentiveness, and defensive driving on local roadways.
Residents and visitors in the area are encouraged to practice safe driving habits on FM 740 and other busy roads. Maintaining a safe following distance, obeying traffic laws, avoiding distractions such as phones, and yielding to emergency vehicles are essential steps for preventing collisions.
Drivers should remain alert for sudden stops, lane changes, and emergency response activity, and they should take extra care when traveling through areas with frequent traffic congestion.
